VIRTOOLS™
takes advantage of Intel's Hyper-Threading technology
VIRTOOLS™, market leader in the world of interactive
3D development solutions, has optimized its technology to make use
of multi-threading and thus takes advantage of Intel's Hyper-Threading
Technology. VIRTOOLS™ also created a proof-of-concept demo
for Intel to showcase the benefits.
VIRTOOLS™ has optimized its technology to make use of multi-threading.
VIRTOOLS™ used multi-threading to allow the processing of
more particle systems and dynamic shadows. Particle systems are
often used in 3D environments to simulate special effects like fire,
smoke, and lasers. Particle systems are typically computationally
intensive. Dynamic shadows are computed by the CPU to give realistic
shadows in 3D environments. Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology
allows the realization of VIRTOOLS™ multi-threading optimizations.
VIRTOOLS™ and Intel worked together to produce Particle
Arena, a showcase demo that showcases VIRTOOLS™ multi-threading
optimizations and Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology.
Intel and Virtools have been cooperating since 1998, to enable Virtools'
technology for the latest Intel Architecture and continue providing
clients with cutting-edge solutions. In the most recent endeavor,
Virtools optimized its software solutions for multi-threading and
therefore game studios using Virtools Dev can take advantage of
Intel's Hyper-Threading.
Virtools: Technological Solutions and Content Creation
Virtools' in-house studio also worked with Intel to create a demo
designed to highlight Hyper-Threading for Intel® Pentium®
4 processors.
The production team focused on particle effects to show how Hyper-Threading
significantly improves performance. The result is the Particle Arena,
in which two opponents engage in a visual battle of wits to win
a duel with particles.
Characters are built from primitive 3D shapes such as cubes, spheres
and cones. Players customize the upper body and lower body, serving
respectively as the attack and defense system. With specific particle
behaviors for each 3D component, new combinations are created each
time characters enter the Arena. When the round begins, characters
spar using their particle effects and defend by deflecting incoming
particles, until one opponent overpowers the other.
The application was created in less than a month, with a 3-person
production team. Virtools' open architecture made it possible for
the scripting and media production to be done in parallel, increasing
productivity and letting the designer test gameplay throughout the
entire production cycle.
"Virtools Dev 2.5 seemlessly delivers the performance boost
offered by the Pentium(r) 4 Processor based systems supporting Hyper-Threading
Technology directly to 3D content developers." says Erik Steeb,
Intel’s Director of Marketing EMEA, "Virtools Dev 2.5
with support for Hyper-Threading Technology allows 3D content developers
to focus on their application and still get great performance from
the latest Intel Technologies."
"We are proud to have optimized our technology for multi-threading
so clients can benefit from Intel's innovative Hyper-Threading”
says Bertrand Duplat, President and CTO of Virtools, “We're
also extremely pleased that Intel extended our collaboration by
asking us to create content to demonstrate the technology's prowess.
Both our core development team and our production studio were involved
– proving Virtools' ability to put our know-how to work and
provide global solutions."
