From Paris to Beijing: discover the amazing challenge of Mr Philippe Fuchs

Ever thought about running the 10,000 kms that separates Paris from Beijing? That's the challenge of Philippe Fuchs, professor at the engineering school Ecole des Mines de Paris and President of the French Virtual Reality Association, who decided to cross countries and continents in 5 months, and to arrive in Beijing for the beginning of the 2008 Olympic Games. His journey was made possible through Dassault Systèmes' Passion for Innovation program, that helps non-profit organizations and passionate individuals fulfill their dreams using Dassault Systèmes' 3D software solutions. Dassault Systèmes thus decided to help Philippe Fuchs in his passion by creating the Virtual Plus Reality Challenge with Virtools technology and two other partners, Sports Without Borders (see article below) and the Marseille Laboratory of Movement and Perception. Using real data from Philippe's run, the lab create the first scientifically valid 3D virtual and bio-realistic foot. Everybody can also follow the progression of Philippe in real-time, online at http://share-vplusr.3ds.com/en/where-is-philippe-now/. In one week, he already runned 525 kms and arrived in Germany!

Support Sports without Borders: run the virtual 3D relay on Facebook!

In parallel with Philippe Fuchs’ challenge, Dassault Systèmes created a virtual race through the well-known social network Facebook. After registering on Facebook, download the V+R application to generate your photorealistic 3D avatar and choose one scene for your relay among the 300 scenes proposed. Then, run your 1km relay and pass it to your friends! In the end, every virtual kilometer run will become one euro for the Sports Without Borders Association.

You too, support Philippe and Sports without Borders by running the course at:

When sport meets Virtual Reality: [rmh]'s interactive playing field

[rmh], a high-profile service provider in the field of interactive media and 3d computer graphics, used Virtools technology to create an interactive playing field. This game consists of an infrared camera which projects the image of a virtual soccer field on an Interactive screen on the floor. It was displayed in Sportarena, a sport retailer store in Bonn, Germany, during the 2006 Soccer World Cup. Real players could thus stand on the screen and play with the virtual soccer ball on the virtual field.

Omedya Inc, new user of Virtools technology

Omedya Inc operates in Ostim, one of the most prominent organized industrial regions in Turkey, with 5000 companies and 50 000 employees. Omedya Inc has chosen Virtools technology for their project to recreate their industrial area in a virtual world. The application, also called Ostim, for "Organized Industrial Region Simulation", is designed as a web-based and multi user 3d game. In this mix of free roaming and role playing type of game, the organized industrial region is reflected with its entire superstructure. A virtual copy of the Real Ostim is created by the reference of satellite photos, vector maps, infrastructure and architectural projects, videos and photographs. A huge database of all products, service and companies are also being integrated to this game. Considering all these together, an Ostim customer doesn't even have to go to Ostim. Instead, he can do an enjoyable, instant and easy shopping. He can travel around Ostim, visit the workshops and get information about the company. He can do 3d-chat with a person of the company he is interested in and interact with the other users on the media. He can visit the virtual tradeshows and have the opportunity to search the products, structured in detail. Or just for fun, he can compete with the other users in activities such as car racing, paintball and carting. In the end, the application will recreate a Living-Ostim online.
