iCinema Centre using Virtools' technology in its 360 degree cylindrical stereo virtual reality theatreThe iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research at the UNSW has created the first cylindrical 360 degree stereo virtual reality theatre constructed to date, using Virtools technology. Up to 20 users can immerse themselves in its highly interactive environment thanks to a combination of real-time 360-degree omnistereo projection, surround audio and markerless motion tracking. Virtools technology has been chosen because it fits the requirements of this highly innovative theatre: an engine capable of compelling immersive and interactive content, as well as unifying framework for integration of various technologies. |

Coal mining industry training with VirtoolsThe UNSW School of Mining Engineering in collaboration with iCinema (see above) has developed an enhanced virtual reality simulator for the coal mining industry. The aim of the project is to improve the understanding of mine environments with regard to human safety in order to develop safer human responses. Like a computer game, the interactive application simulates an underground mine environment by projecting an immersive mine model in two theatre configurations - a 360-degree version for group training (see above), and a hemi-spherical 'dome' for individual training sessions. |

Results of the 3D3 awardsThe fourth edition of the 3D3 Contest, organized by ART 3000 – Le Cube in partnership with Virtools, has just rewarded the most original and quality projects made with Virtools technology. Special price and Arte-tv.com Prize for cultural content was attributed to Isart Digital students Jonathan Derrough and Hadrien Enlart for their “Blind” Project. ART3000 – Le Cube Prize for artistic expression was attributed to Joran Blanchard, from ATI Paris 8 for his “Drumpainting” application. Finally, Virtools Prize awarding best technical work was attributed to Romain Boucher, Nicolas Montels and Yoann Guérin talended students from Isart Digital for their “Teddy Blaster” game.
