Virtools High Dynamic Range Car Demo


Concept: A Demo Showing High Dynamic Range (HDR) Rendering, Image Based Lighting (IBL), Dual Tone Car Paint and Post-Processing Effects.

Showing off Virtools™ 4's high end rendering capabilities, this car demo illustrates some of the latest real-time HDR Rendering techniques using multiple shaders. Some of the HDR Rendering features include floating point texture and render target, tone mapping, natural eye adaptation (auto exposure) and glow. This demo also shows Virtools 4's image based lighting shader capabilities, using an environmental texture to compute the car's lighting.

Application: Technical Requirements, Controls and Settings

  • WARNING: This demo may not be viewable on all PCs. DX9 and at least a VS_2.0 shader-compliant graphics card is required! Your graphics card must be able to support:
    • Shader model 2.0
    • Floating-point 64-Bit HDR texture render (format: A16B16G16R16F)
    • IEEE Floating-point 32-bits textures (format: R32F)
    • 8 Pixel pipeline is recommended for better performance.
  • Controls
    • Press Tab, Enter or Spacebar to activate the options menu.
    • Press Esc to quit the demo.
    • 'Automatic Camera' mode is triggered after 2 minutes of inactivity (Left-Click during 'Automatic Camera' to pilot the demo again).
    • Left-Click on the '<<' and '>>' buttons to navigate through categories.
    • Drag the bottom-right sliders to tweak effects.

  • Global Settings:
    • Lighting Env.
      • Swap between the different lightning environments.
    • Paint Color
      • Swap between the different paint colors.
    • Camera Mode
      • Orbital Camera
        • Left-Click + Move the mouse to orbit around the head.
        • Roll Middle Mouse Button to move closer/farther away.
      • Free Camera
        • Move the mouse to change the orientation view.
        • Use keyboard arrows to move the camera.
      • Automatic Camera
    • Auto FSAA
      • Apply Full Scene Antialiasing when the camera does not move.
    • Force FSAA
      • Always apply Full Scene Antialiasing (Not recommended for low end systems).
    • Sleep Mode
      • Activate the Auto Camera mode trigger switch.
    • Software Alpha Blend.
      • Activate alpha blending script to provide alpha blending with HDR render target. Hardware HDR alpha blending is not supported by graphic card older than GForce6 series. (Auto detected)
    • Full Screen - go to fullscreen mode.
    • Full Screen Res. - choose fullscreen resolution.
  • HDR Settings
    • Auto Exposure (On)
      • Middle Grey
        • Middle brightness region of the scene. (Average Luminance)
      • Adaptation Speed
        • Speed of the eye adaptation.
    • Auto Exposure (Off)
      • Exposure (Manual exposure control)
    • Glow (On/Off)
      • Pass Count (number of glow filter iteration)
