Established in 1985, Medialab Technlogy is located in Paris and specializes
in multimedia and post-production, with an accent on bringing 3D to the web. Medialab teamed up with Royale Production, expert producers of sailing videos, to create axnew website that radically changes the way we experience and understand sailing regattas.


Challenge: Create a Promotional Website to Inform Sailing Enthusiasts

To give sailing aficionados the opportunity to see races online, in 3D and
in real-time, Medialab and Royale Production needed a powerful production
tool with an architecture open and flexible enough to incorporate existing
proprietary data, yet intuitive enough to be quickly integrated into the
production process in order to maintain tight production schedules. Their
choice was to use the winning duo of Virtools Dev 2.0 with the Virtools Server 1.0, to allow visitors to experience each race as it
happens, as well as re-live the previous ones.

The decisive factor lies in the ability of Virtools-based simulation to
display greater quantities of complex information in comparison to
traditional media. Adapting to a specific user's choices, the progress of specific boats, sailing routes and particular wind directions change dynamically, adapting to individual user choices.


Solution: Open Architecture for Dynamic Real-time Information

As a new race begins, the Virtools Server refreshes the boats'
positions and progress in real-time, as well as weather information, to
create the most realistic 3D simulation possible. All sailing data collected
can be used to recreate the races; viewers can then accelerate race process to study and analyze strategies used by various competitors. The power and flexibility of such an information display system enriches the viewer experience and enhances understanding of sailing techniques.
