Michael Schumacher Racing World - Kart 2002

Terratools

TERRATOOLS, an innovative 3D media company founded by Professor Ulrich Weinberg in 1993, develops applications with interactive 3D environments. Based in Babelsburg, Germany, just outside Berlin, Terratools' 30-person team designs, develops and produces 3D games, 3D multimedia and 3D e-business applications.

In the summer of 1999, TERRATOOLS developed the 3D advergame "FunRun" in under 10 weeks with the help of Virtools Dev 1.0. TERRATOOLS was contacted by Paraworld to develop a game around the Michael Schumacher license. Since both companies had experience with Virtools Dev, they knew it was the tool to use to produce a high-quality game quickly and easily.

Challenge: Achieve the Fastest Development Cycle Possible

TERRATOOLS had started using Virtools as a prototyping tool, but with the release of Dev 2.0, they decided to use it as a complete game engine. In October 2001, TERRATOOLS began production of the high quality PC racing title Michael Schumacher Racing World – Kart 2002 with Virtools Dev 2.0, and it hit store shelves in June 2002, completed in just seven months and published by JoWood.

Solution: Virtools Dev 2.0's Power and Flexibility Combined with its User-Friendly Behavioral Scripting Language

Thanks to Virtools' drag-and-drop behavioral scripting language and its user-friendly graphic user interface, MS Racing World – Kart 2002's development cycle was dramatically shortened to just seven months for a full action title. The team comprised of a project manager, two graphic designers, three Virtools scripters, and three programmers. Since TERRATOOLS uses 3DS MAX as their modeling tool, Virtools perfectly integrates into their production pipeline.

From concept to delivery, the Virtools behavioral engine gave the Terratools production team all the control they needed to smoothly and quickly implement game logic. Core gameplay components like car dynamics, opponent-AI, ghost driver functionality, etc. were developed in C++ and integrated into the Virtools open architecture. Even the integration of 3rd party components (i.e. libraries for movie playback or force feedback support) was relatively easy.

Key Benefits

With such positive end-results and net financial gains, TERRATOOLS proved the competritive advantage offered by Virtools Dev for the production of high performance action titles.

With Virtools Dev, we could concentrate on the really important aspect of game development: make the game fun to play! TERRATOOLS will definitely use Virtools Dev in future productions because of its flexibility & extendibility."
