Syberia Action/Adventure Game
Microids and B. Sokal
Founded in 1985 by president Elliot Grassiano, MICROïDS is a French
company that has been developing, editing and distributing video games
for the last 15 years. Initially known as a development house, the
company expanded in 1995 to cover publishing and distribution, and
the company's turnover has increased spectacularly ever since. Microïds
published its first interactive 3D blockbuster, Fort Boyard Millennium
with Virtools Dev 1.0.1, followed by the epic adventure game Road
to India, made with Virtools Dev 2.0. To create the Syberia
adventure game, Microïds teamed up with B. Sokal, acclaimed author/illustrator
of the Amerzone CD ROM.
Challenge:
Create the Ultimate Adventure Game
With the acclaimed success of Fort Boyard and Road to India
under its belt, Microïds' streamlined development process had been
honed to perfection with Virtools Dev and had proven financially lucrative.
The next step? Microïds wanted to create the epic adventure game of
2002. With a two million Euro budget and an experienced 30-person
team, the infrastructure was already set to create a real blockbuster.
In Syberia, based on the story and illustrations by B. Sokal
(author of Amerzone), players take on the role of lawyer Kate Walker,
who has been entrusted by the Universal Toy Company to negotiate the
takeover of an old luxury toy and robot factory…
Solution: Behavior Technology and User-friendly
Development Platform for Cost-efficient, Rapid Production
Virtools
Dev 2.1, with its real-time 3D rendering engine, behavior technology
and user-friendly development platform made it possible to complete
Syberia in only 18 months. With the smooth production process
inherent in Virtools software solutions, Microïds' experienced development
team could focus on the real issue: game design. The production workforce
was comprised primarily of graphic artists, with three programmers
and a game designer rounding out the 30-person production team. Syberia
was already awarded the "Best Adventure Game" award at the E3 2002
Conference, and is quickly earning critical acclaim. The game is expected
to dethrone Myst as the best-selling adventure game title of all time.
Key Benefits
With its third major game title on store shelves, Microïds has an excellent proven track record using Virtools Dev as its development platform. By using Dev, Microïds has reduced its time-to-market and production costs, while letting development teams concentrate on the high-quality graphics and intriguing gameplay that has brought fame to Microïds.
