Post Mortem Adventure Game
Microids
Founded in 1985 by president Elliot Grassiano, MICROïDS is a
French company that has been developing, editing and distributing
video games for the last 15 years. Initially known as a development
house, the company expanded in 1995 to cover publishing and distribution,
and the company's turnover has increased spectacularly ever since.
Microïds published its first interactive 3D blockbuster, Fort
Boyard Millennium with Virtools Dev 1.0.1, followed by the epic
adventure game Road to India
made with Virtools Dev 2.0. Most recently, Microïds teamed up
with B. Sokal, acclaimed author and illustrator of the Amerzone
CD-ROM to create the highly-acclaimed adventure game made with Virtools,
Syberia, which has
already won a host of prizes.
Challenge: Develop a High-quality, Epic
Adventure Game in Little Time and With Reduced Costs
Microïds'
experience in creating addictive action and adventure games has given
the development studio a great reputation for producing high-quality
game. To live up to the name they've made for themselves and create
another blockbuster like those previously made with Virtools, the
development team needed to minimize the time spent developing a new
game engine and costly tools. Microïds wanted to focus on real
game design issues – like the incredible gameplay and graphics
that make a difference in what players see and experience with Post
Mortem.
Post Mortem casts the player as an American detective named
Gus Macpherson in 1920s Paris, hired by a woman to find her sister
and brother-in-law's murderer. The lovebirds were apparently beheaded
in their hotel room, in keeping with strange ancestral rituals. In
typical film noir fashion, the police are helpless so it's up to a
hard-boiled detective to crack the case.
Solution: Dev’s Efficient and Powerful
Development Environment to Keep Production Under Control and Create
Top-quality Games
Virtools’
user-friendly, cost-efficient development platform proved once again
to be a judicious choice. Microïds’ team was able to develop
and complete the epic adventure game in only 10 months. Virtools technology
streamlined the production process to save time and money throughout
development.
Post-Mortem was made by an in-house team of 27 people,
comprised of 8 graphic artists, 5 animators, 6 programmers, along
with lead designers and project managers. Dev facilitated workflow
and project management to clearly reduce delays and costs typically
involved in game development.
By
using Dev, Microïds reduced its time-to-market and production
costs, while letting development teams concentrate on the high-quality
graphics and intriguing gameplay that has earned Microïds fame
and recognition. With its novel ideas and striking visual style,
this murder-mystery story is on the road to becoming one of this
year's most engaging adventures available for the PC. (http://www.postmortem-videogame.com/)
