Jack The Ripper Action/Adventure Game

Galiléa

Galiléa acts in the game and interactive entertainment business since 1996 with two main product lines: strategy games and adventure games. With offices in Grenoble, France, and Montréal, Canada, Galiléa is active on both European and North American market.
With the release of Jack The Ripper, a Dreamcatcher/MC2 France/Galiléa Production coproduction, Galiléa shows once again the ability to create impressive and captivating adventure games.

Application

«Jack The Ripper», awarded as the best adventure game of the show at the «IGN PC Best of E3 2003 awards», uses quality graphics, a powerful technology and an effective gameplay in order to create a sensational and terrifying experience to the player.

In this game, you interpret James Palmer, a young reporter who will soon get involved in a cat-and-mouse game with an illusive and deadly character: Jack the Ripper. Beginning with the search of witnesses to the crimes, Palmer’s snooping will soon lead him to investigate suspects. Along Palmer’s dark journey in the murder district, he will foster a friendship with a young singer, Abigail, the «Irish Nightingale,» and meet numerous colorful characters. His daily editorials trigger the interest of the serial killer, who begins to correspond with him…

The Challenge

The adventure genre is focused on the player experience so the challenge lied in using technologies allowing Galiléa to create immersive stories on an average computer.
To create their impressive adventure game Galiléa’s goal was to concentrate on the graphics, final render and gameplay.
They finally needed a technology making it possible to develop this sophisticated game within controlled time and budgets.

The Solution

Galiléa choosed to use Virtools solutions as a basis, on which they added a specific technology codenamed “zCube” to integrate real-time 3D characters and items onto the 360° prerendered environments. Their goal was to retain the details and quality of prerendered graphics while adding much more interactivity, even on average computers.

«Jack The Ripper is the first production using Virtools technology, and it was a positive experience all along the production» says Philippe Gaudé, VP Development of Galiléa. «Virtools is a stable development platform, mature and easily adaptable to our work organization. We were very impressed by Virtools solutions and the ease of integration our own zCube technology into it.»

Thanks to Virtools technology, Galiléa succeeded in creating a captivating adventure game by concentrating on the user experience while benefiting from a powerful and robust development environment.
